The Hamptons. Just that phrase by itself conjures up images of socialites, celebrities and hedge fund bankers partying the night away by the pool of one of the multi-million dollar homes dotting this popular seaside resort on Long Island’s east end. But the Hamptons, which comprise a group of villages and hamlets in the towns of Southampton and East Hampton, are more than just the epicenter of Long Island’s social scene.

Lately, the loudest buzz in the Hamptons have been coming from Montauk on the area’s easternmost edge, and the village of Sag Harbor.

Montauk, where grungy motels and antiquated restaurants are now morphing into hyper-chic establishments, is home to the Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest in New York State. The fourth oldest active lighthouse in the country, Montauk Point Lighthouse boasts a 110-foot high tower. If a climb to the pinnacle seems too daunting, visitors have the option of exploring the museum located in the 1860 Keepers’ house. Among other artifacts, it houses an intriguing assortment of historical documents and photographs. It was off Montauk Point that the famed slave ship, the La Amistad, was captured after its cargo of slaves from Sierra Leone had taken control of the ship.

The Village of Sag Harbor, too, has its own chapter in the annals of Black history. The tight knit African-American neighborhood was established in the early twentieth century as a retreat from racism. Actually, this past January 25, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, took a fascinating look at the incorporated village, which straddles the towns of Southampton and East Hampton. The documentary featured an interview with Sag Harbor resident and famous restaurateur B. Smith and her husband Dan Gasby.

Historically known as Hyde Park, Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is one of the region's oldest Hudson River estates. For nearly two centuries, this place has been home to socially prominent New Yorkers. A superb example of its type, Hyde Park represents the domestic ideal of the elite class in the late nineteenth-century America. It provides a glimpse of estate life, the social stratification of the period, and the world of the American millionaire during the era historians refer to as the Gilded Age.

The National Park Service preserves over 200 acres of the original property, including historic buildings, original furnishings, manicured landscapes, natural woodlands, formal gardens and associated documents. The centerpiece of the estate is the mansion, a masterpiece of American Beaux-Arts design by the distinguished architectural firm McKim, Mead & White.
